When shopping for a hard drive, there are really only a few key specs you need to keep track of:
- Capacity: A "small" hard drive these days is about 250GB, "medium" is 500GB, and "large" is over a terabyte (1000 GB). Take your pick!
- Speed: The faster the hard drive spins, the faster access times you'll have to your data. Typical (RPM - rotations per minute) range from 7200 up to 15000, but for normal users the lowest RPM should be adequate -- only gamers need to take advantage of the super fast access times.

External hard drives tend to be much more expensive than internal ones, so only get one if you really need one (you will be traveling with your data). Western Digital offers very nice "Passports" that are about the size of an iPod and hold anywhere from 100GB up to 500GB, but again, if you can buy an Internal hard drive, I'd go that route.
